Two seats open on Big Sky School District Board of Directors

Members of the community are encouraged to register for a place on the May 8 mail-in school board election ballot. Deadline to file is April 5 and ballots will be mailed out April 23.

Board Member Matt Jennings’ term is up and Margo Magnant must run to keep her seat. Magnant was appointed by the board in October to fill a vacancy created by Kim Gunderson’s departure from the district mid-term.

Terms are three years. The board meets monthly and there are several sub-committees to join depending on skills and interest, from personnel to wellness, budget and negotiation.

Current Board Member Whitney Littman offered her thoughts on why locals should consider running for a seat.

“The school board is an excellent way to contribute to the Big Sky community and ensure the mission and vision of the school,” said Littman. “With continued growth in enrollment and growing demands and expectations on our students due to the competitive nature of jobs and secondary education, getting involved in the development and management of the school is a critical way to ensure that this community produces thoughtful, capable and contributing members of society.”

Littman continued, “As education dollars are determined at the state level, but supported by the local taxpayer, it is also our responsibility to ensure fiscal responsibility. I believe the Big Sky School District to be at the heart of the Big Sky community, whether you have children in it or not. If you want to interact with terrific teachers, administrators and students, the school board post is worth one’s consideration!”

Anyone interested in running can get an application at the Big Sky School District or online at www.opi.mt.gov
