Senior KP Hoffman boxes out against White Sulphur Springs.

Hustle keeps girls team in it against White Sulphur

A vocal crowd cheered the Big Horns on in their conference opener at home, but the excitement in the gym didn’t heat up the team’s shooting. The Big Horns ended the first period down 11-14.

But then Lone Peak took the lead 15-14 in the second period, only to watch White Sulphur sink a three to take back the lead. Later, with a minute left in the first half, the Hornets hit another 3 to go ahead 19-18.

Then at the start of the second half, Jayleen Cole took the ball to the basket and sunk her shot while getting fouled. She then made a free throw to put Lone Peak ahead 23-21.

Not long after that, Senior KP Hoffman got hit in the eye and had to go to the bench. But once Hoffman came back in, she helped shift the momentum back toward the Big Horns.

Hoffman drove the lane and scored. She was also fouled and hit the foul shot, cutting White Sulphur’s lead to one point with 20.4 seconds left. But then the Big Horns failed to grab rebounds off a couple of missed White Sulphur free throws down the stretch and the Hornets held on to beat Lone Peak 37-39.

The next day on Dec. 19 at Manhattan Christian, the Big Horns lost again, this time 58-35.
