Miners take home 1st in West Yellowstone basketball tournament

Seventh and eighth grade boys go 4-0 on Saturday

Heading down to West this weekend, the Ophir boys middle school basketball team—made up of both seventh and eighth graders—took first place in the West Yellowstone Invitational with head coach Al Malinowski. To win out, the Miners went 4-0 in one day.

“It was an impressive team performance winning four straight in West Yellowstone to capture the first Annual West Yellowstone Invitational Tournament Championship. The West Yellowstone Invitational was comprised of 10 teams from the 11/12C District, which is Lone Peak High School's district for basketball. The Miners won every game in the tournament by at least 22 points and all 12 rostered players (nine 8th graders and three 7th graders) scored at least one basket and played in all four games,” explained Malinowski.

Coach Malinowski especially enjoyed the way the group of boys supported one another. “It was exciting to watch them win the tournament, but more important to me was how they did it. When we play together both offensively and defensively like we did Saturday, we are a difficult team to beat. I was also proud of the effort the boys put into getting everyone involved in the scoring, including the enthusiasm when two of our players scored their first baskets of the season,” said Malinowski.
