The first two hours

On June 16, a day before a tree caught fire near the South Fork Loop in Big Sky, Mont., the Big Sky Fire Department (BSFD) in collaboration with the Gallatin County Sheriff ’s Office (GSCO) conducted a tabletop exercise scenario regarding a fire and evacuation in the Jack Creek area.

Tom Urell and Jim Singer were out hiking up Jack Creek Trail, U.S. Forest Service Trail 6317, about 10 miles east of Ennis, Mont on Jan. 27. Both men were familiar with the area and were experienced outdoorsmen— both hunters and Singer formally employed at Glacier National Park.
